Helderberg Meadworks is a unique “winery” located at the edge of the Helderberg Mountains where fresh water and local raw honey are used to craft the finest mead. They are one of the few meaderies in the state who primarily produce mead.
Still the One Distillery, located in Westchester County, is one of the first and only distilleries in the world to create vodka from honey. The operation began as the home to Comb Vodka, made by taking orange blossom honey, fermenting it into mead, then slowly distilling the mead twice to create the award-winning Comb Vodka.
The owners of Palaia Winery are from the Woodstock generation and – as the peace symbol on all their labels attests to – they aren’t afraid to show it. A family run winery with a tasting room in a 200-year-old barn on land once owned by Aaron Burr, Palaia is affectionately known as the Hudson Valley’s “hippie winery.”
The partners of Slate Point Meadery started experimenting with mead five gallons at a time back in 2010.
Mead is having its moment. All it took was about 8,000 years. Even though it’s been around for ages and is one of the oldest alcoholic beverages known to man it hasn’t been that prominent until recently.
When the sun comes out to play in the Hudson Valley, our palates tend to follow suit. Thankfully, the producers here are in the mood for tinkering, too.
